I hope you are all doing really well.

Skin Lightening is one topic I am really reluctant to write about because I am a staunch believer in saying no-no to skin bleaching. But many people keep asking me these questions about how to lightly tone their skin with natural ingredients.

What I find is that some of these people claiming they want to lightly tone their skin are actually looking for skin whitening, even though they deny it.

Skin whitening is a world apart from skin lightening. I am not even going to bother talking about skin whitening because I am against it. that leaves us with skin lightening.

My take on it is this; as we grow older we tend to get darker in complexion, some people have dark patches (Hyper-pigmentation) in different places on their faces. Many people will like to delay this ageing sign for as long as possible, I think this is fair enough, what do you think?​

So here are 11 natural ingredients known for their skin lightening effect, I have included the properties that make them have a lightening effect on the skin so you can make an informed decision.

The Key properties to look out for in natural skin lightening ingredient is Vitamin C because it has been scientifically proven to reduce the amount of melanin produced by the skin. Also antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Please don’t expect to use them once and see an instant result, it is a gradual effect. So patience and consistency is the key.​

Aloe Vera Gel

​Aloe Vera gel is an ingredient that has been around for centuries, used for many purposes which include Skincare. This natural ingredient is full of vitamins and nutrients that help skin to heal and lighten skin to its original colour.​

To use I suggest mixing Aloe Vera Gel with cream or mix with lemon juice and apply to face or affected area, leave for about 20 minutes and wash it off. Use daily for a quick result.

Potatoes​

Potatoes are really not strange to us, right?​

​Because potatoes are particularly rich in vitamin C, which is a very important nutrient for healthy skin. This natural ingredient will lighten and brighten your skin if you rubbed your skin with it after peeling and slicing so juice ​is out. You can also grate and press the juice out to use.

Turmeric

Ask the Indians about this natural ingredient and you will be surprised by the uncountable things they will tell you this powder can do for your health and skincare, why?

Turmeric contains a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant called Curcumin. A really effective way to lighten skin naturally.​

To use you can mix with any of the other natural lightening ingredients like yoghurt and apply to your face, leave for some minutes and wash off with warm water. Be careful though it thus stains clothes. Also, this powder is versatile so you can add to face scrubs, Masks, and mix with oils if you desire.

Yoghurt​

So it goes without saying that we are talking about Natural plain yoghurt.

A skin lightener because it contains powerful nutrients like Zinc, which among many other properties is necessary for cell reproduction and growth of tissues.

Lactic Acid which helps exfoliates and moisturizes dry skin to make it smooth.

Calcium much of the epidermal layer of the skin consists of calcium! Calcium is important for the skin because it facilitates skin renewal.

Finally, Vitamin B which keeps skin glowing and hydrated, necessary for cell growth and regeneration, protects skin cells from damages by free radicals. Also responsible for facilitating the manufacture of healthy fats in cells.

Gram Flour

Gram Flour helps in the lightening of skin because of its exfoliating properties which clear away dead skin and encourage production of new cells.

Also, the alkalizing properties of gram flour maintain the pH level of the skin so it removes dirt and toxins from the deeper layer of the skin to enhance the natural glow.

Like the other natural ingredients mentioned earlier, you can mix with Aloe Vera Juice or Rosewater to form a paste and apply to your face. This powder can also be added to scrubs, Masks, Oils, or yoghurts.

Cucumber

Cucumber is yum, yeah we get it. Why not let your skin enjoy the same yumminess?

This natural ingredient is cooling and soothing to the skin. The rich minerals, vitamins and many other properties help it to tone and lighten skin flawlessly.

You can simply slice and rub on your skin. You can also grate and press out the juice and add 2 other lightening ingredients before applying to face. Your choice, go wild.

Oatmeal

​​ Oatmeal contains amino acids, antioxidants, avenanthramides, anti-inflammatory, and many other skin loving properties. So this ingredient will not only lighten your skin but moisturise and make your skin smoother. ​ Just like the other ingredients, you can add to your mask, scrub, or add other skin lightening ingredients.

Tomatoes

​Eating tomatoes is beneficial for your health and skin. So while we are taking care of the skin from inside, let’s do it from outside too.

Tomatoes are natural protection from UV rays because it is rich in lycopene. Tomatoes properties include skin cooling, astringent, and natural acids. All for the health of your skin.

Use alone or mix with other lightening Ingredients.

Lemons

​Lemon is rich in Vitamin C, it also has antibacterial and natural antioxidant properties. Which makes a very strong skin lightening ingredients.

​Please do be careful. Some skins may not be able to withstand the potency of Lemon.

Camwood Powder

Camwood Powder contains powerful Antioxidants and it is also an anti-inflammatory agent that helps to improve blood circulation to your face, remove toxins, and fight the formation of wrinkle-causing free radicals. ​

This ingredient is famous for clearing scars and dark patches, so a great addition to your scrubs, masks, and face creams for the desired result. An African secret to clear smooth skin.

Honey

Honey is a natural humectant (something that draws moisture to the skin) this will help skin hydrate and eventually toned.​ The fact that it is antiseptic also helps it in clearing dark spots.

You can use on its own or mix with some other natural ingredients, then wash off with warm water after 20 minutes.

Please remember Black is Beautiful, no reason to bleach or whiting your skin.
