Halloo,
How many of you have heard the phrase ‘Black don’t crack’ or ‘Black don’t burn’ or similar statements like that?
I hear it a lot. I have no problem with these statements until it concerns SUNSCREEN!
Many people with black skin still believe they don’t need to take any special protection against harmful sun rays. Please don’t be one of them.
Is sunscreen part of your skincare routine?
If your answer is no, please add it, especially in sunshine filled months of summer.
My sunscreen protection is simple really.
This is a must; the dangers are real I tell you.
You do know that the UV rays from the sun can cause serious permanent damage to the skin, don’t you? Not only that there is another dangerous ray from sunshine called UVB rays, this is responsible for skin cancer and also sunburn. There is more, UVA rays from the sun is responsible for pigmentation, wrinkles, fine lines, and premature ageing of the skin.
You can shield your skin from these harmful rays from the sun by using a good sunscreen.
Let’s not forget that there are benefits from sunshine too. Like Vitamin D which we all need to help regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the our bodies. Vitamin D keeps bones, teeth and muscles healthy.
Some people with psoriasis claimed sunshine helps with their condition.
Also the brightness of sunshine is mood boosting. It really is.
I am a Natural Skincare Enthusiast, so I generally avoid most of the store-bought sunscreen products because I find them laden with many ingredients, I am not happy with (for health and environmental reasons). And I read recently that a new research claimed that chemicals in sunscreen products are absorbed into the bloodstream. Scary, if true.
Unfortunately most natural ingredients have really low SPF according to experts. So you need to take proper precaution here.
I have always escaped by using just wheatgerm oil as my sunscreen, because it has SPF 20, which means sun protection factor 20, theoretically you can stay protected in the sun for 400 minutes if your tolerance for sun without any sunscreen is 20 minutes. Decent enough.
I apply and re-apply Wheatgerm Oil during the day according to my movements. But Europe sunshine is getting stronger every year and I am afraid my poor wheatgerm oil is no longer sufficient.
So, this year, I made a homemade sunscreen cream adding Zinc oxide, a mineral sunscreen.
I always apply this after my moisturiser, so basically it is the last step in my skincare routine before putting on my make-up.
I carry this homemade cream around with me and reapply to part of body that is exposed every 3 hours.
I still use my wheatgerm oil on mild sunny days.
I always hydrate my skin after exposure to sunshine because I find sunshine quite drying. For someone with extreme dry skin this is very important.
To those who thinks that the sunscreen in their make-up products is enough, think again. Skin experts says it is not.
Don’t age before your time just because you think you are racially blessed. Even a beautiful garden needs watering.
In conclusion whether you choose homemade, natural, mineral, organic, or chemical sunscreen, please buy quality one with the highest SPF you can find and be sure to see that broad spectrum is written on the product.
Also, there are clothes that can protects you from harmful rays from sunshine, why not look into that?
Please be safe.
