Halloo,

Our mental health responds well to positive acts of self-care. That is why healthy mental wellbeing should be a priority to us all. It is not enough to just talk about it but to make it a priority, commit time and efforts into it.

We have to learn to put ourselves first once in a while, treat ourselves kindly without feeling guilty. In the midst of all the craziness, not to forget yourself and make sure you treat yourself with kindness too. It is not just other people who need kindness and consideration from you. You need kindness and consideration from yourself too. It is crucial for self-esteem.

Why should you put yourself first? Isn’t that being selfish? We have been constantly told from a very young age to be selfless. I am sure that somewhere along the line, the meaning of these words have been distorted. Most people take this statement as meaning making sure others are okay without consideration for their own needs. This is wrong.

I am not of this school of thought, and I am not shy in saying so. I am a firm believer in –nobody can pour from an empty cup. To help others you have to be in good shape. I make it a point of duty to prioritise time for myself, it is a way of managing my day-to-day life stresses.

Our bodies have unique ways of communicating with us and we have to learn to recognise this and listen. Let’s not be so caught up in doing other things and forget to take care of ourself. Using all your energy on others and having nothing left for yourself is not healthy. Practising self-care is a way to empower yourself to be helpful to others. It is an important life balancing act.

Set time aside to do things you enjoy. It is very important. Identify things you enjoy or things you want or need, then set aside time to meet these needs. It is very fulfilling, I promise you.

It may sound silly or childish but if you have always been curious about something or want to learn how to do something, satisfy your soul and make yourself happy by doing something about it. This is positive self-care in action.

We always assume that being kind to ourselves have to be this big gesture of treating ourselves to an exotic holiday or buying a designer handbag, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be so. You may have noticed how sexy salsa dancing is and wish to learn, bingo! Go learn it. That is one thing crossed off your list.

There are so many things that can contribute to mental health problems, but we can prevent most of them with having proper relationship with ourself.

One of the ways to have a good relationship with oneself is valuing yourself. We thrive when we feel valued. So why not value yourself and love yourself? Your mind is picking up on all these.

Don’t be harsh with yourself. Don’t criticise yourself. Don’t be too judgmental with yourself. Speak kindly to yourself. Care for yourself the way you care for others. Support yourself. Congratulate yourself. Be loyal to yourself. Be kind to yourself.

The way other people reacts to your kindness is the way you will react too. Being conscious of self-care in our daily lives is mood boosting and motivating.

Doing something you enjoy without guilt is developing a healthy relationship with yourself. You can’t complain of other people treating you badly when you don’t treat yourself right.
