Sodium Bicarbonate is also known as Baking Soda. Sodium Bicarbonate is a naturally occurring compound in mineral springs. Sodium Bicarbonate is used for beauty purposes. It is also used for cleaning, clearing odours, doing laundry, shampoos, and foot soaks.

Sodium bicarbonate is a pantry staple in many homes for cooking. Just know that it can do more than help in cooking, it can be useful in keeping the body clean and healthy.

Baking soda is alkaline in nature, so it is a great way to tackle grease. It is also a natural odour absorber. Here are some of the uses of baking soda you may not have heard of:

  1. If you are ever in need of a natural deep cleanser look no further than baking soda, it is mildly abrasive and perfect as face cleanser. Just make a paste of 3 tablespoons of baking soda to 1 tablespoon of water, gently massaged unto a clean face. Rinse off with warm water.
  2. For easy to style, cleaner hair free of hairspray and products buildup add bicarbonate of soda to your shampoo.
  3. Soaking in a Bath with baking soda added to the bath water will make skin more smooth and silky.
  4. Dusting a little bicarbonate of soda underarm will help keep body odour under control.
  5. Minor skin irritations like sunburn, burns, itching, pain, swelling, and scratches can be relieved with baking soda paste. Mix water with baking soda and apply to the affected area.
  6. You can remove plaque buildup from your teeth with sodium bicarbonate, simply add to a wet toothbrush and brush.
  7. Baking soda can be used as mouthwash to remove aftertastes or odour.
  8. Baking soda can dissolve grease from hard surfaces by simply making a solution with water, then use a sponge with it to scrub the grease away. Great for cleaning frying pans, pots, cooker tops, and cooking areas.
  9. Bicarbonate of soda can be used to clean, and remove bad smells from microwaves. Use a microwaveable bowl, make a mixture of 2 tablespoons of baking soda with a cup of water in the bowl, and place in the microwave. Put the microwave on for 3 minutes, then wipe after it is cooled.
  10. Baking soda is a great healthy solution for removing bad smells from fridges. Simply put a bowl of baking soda in your fridge and the odour will vanish.
  11. Baking soda and vinegar can be poured down a blocked sink to unblock it. Just mix a cup of baking soda and a cup of vinegar and pour down the sink, then cover it. After 10 minutes pour boiling water down the sink. Works for light blockage and also remove bad odour.
  12. Bicarbonate of soda can be used to clean the oven too. Simply make a paste with a cup of baking soda and 3 tablespoons of water. Take the oven racks out and spread the paste in, concentrating on areas with stubborn stains. Leave for 20 minutes, then wash off vinegar and water.
  13. Sodium bicarbonate is a great healthy cleaner for bathtubs, toilet sinks, tiles, and more. It will lift stains easily and keep white from losing its colour.
  14. Baking soda can be used to remove grimes and dirts from almost all household utensils instead of harsh chemicals.

NOTE: Baking soda is not a disinfectant, it won’t kill germs. So remember to use disinfectants too if needed. Vinegar is a natural disinfectant, great for cleaning around the home.
