Halloo,

I hesitate a bit to write this piece. But I have made a promise to myself that this is my space and I am going to write about anything that matters to me. This particular topic is troubling me.

My hesitation is based on the religious sentiments among Africans. Religion is something we, Africans, take very seriously; more seriously than the people who brought religions to us.

I know that when it comes to religious matters, I can’t win. If the matter involves Christianity, I will be accused of attacking Christians because I am a Muslim. And if my topic is based on Islam, you will see many Muslims coming out to say I am not a good Muslim or my knowledge of Islam is not adequate enough. Fair enough, each person to their own thoughts.

I don’t know about you, but I think the several atrocities being committed by religious leaders these days need looking into by the power that is. Social Media has made it possible for these people to be exposed. A lot are caught red-handed committing adultery, embezzlement, extortion, voodoo, and many unspeakable acts.

Victims are coming out en-mass with irrefutable evidence of the wrongdoings of these men. Yet, you will read or hear some ridiculous comments from some of their flocks in their defence.

The most worrying is that the exposed religious leaders will be left to walk the street as if nothing happened. And in their places of worship, it is business as usual. I am sure all people with their senses intact will be wondering who are the people still following these exposed religious leaders? Beats me too.

I have to say “Mental Slavery among Africans, especially Nigerians, is what we have here.” I have no other explanation for this craziness. Religion has replaced our senses.

I am glad that many people are waking up and speaking loudly about this nonsense. But there are still some die-hard religious imbeciles. They refused to see what is under their noses for fear of annoying God.

Religious leaders are humans and prone to mistakes. A fact many fanatics can’t accept. The problem is what some of these religious leaders are doing can’t be classified as mistakes; their actions are calculated and planned for their own benefits. Some of the benefits are diabolical and defy normal human comprehension.

Most Africans can’t even think for themselves, especially when the issue being discussed is connected to their religious leader or religion. They will quote and quote from the holy books. They will bring out scriptures from the Bibles. Verses from the Quran to back up their warped reasoning.

If you point out the wrongness of something, they have nothing to tell you other than you need divine knowledge to understand the holy books. The same holy books we are supposed to read daily, but all of a sudden you need a degree in theology to understand them. I don’t get it!

Some Africans will say the most ridiculous things just to defend their religious leaders. This is common in both Christianity and Islam (the 2 religions I am very familiar with). If you question the wrong actions of their pastor or Imam, you will be accused of having no respect or that God says touch not my anointed.

I sometimes wondered whether they are just saying these ridiculous things to save face or do they truly believe them to be the truth? Because I want to believe that nobody can be that brain dead.

Are we that much in mental bondage that we can’t differentiate right from wrong? That we need a set of people who claimed to be spiritually superior to us to tell us what to think and do? Why Africans? Why Nigerians? Please why?

The sad thing is It one rule for these people and another rule for the rest of us mere mortals? I am truly baffled and worried. Many people get riled up about the history of slavery of Africans. We all feel the pains and atrocities visited by our ancestors in slavery. Why then are we willingly handing over our freedom to businessmen disguised as men of God? Salvation?

I am going to stay away from mentioning names because I want my African people to read without prejudice. Particular names enrage them and will distract them from my message. I just want us to serve and worship our creator without being made a fool of.

We are given brains by God to use, not for decorations. The people you are looking up to are not going to be doing anything extraordinary than just sitting back and thinking. So, why not do the same? God is very merciful; you don’t need to empty your bank account before God knows you are in need.

Most of these religious leaders you place these huge responsibilities on don’t even have your best interest at heart. They are out to enrich themselves. Their interpretations, explanations, judgments, or decisions will be based on their own interests.

This is so apparent every time there is a crisis in the community, we all see or hear their messed-up judgements. Ridiculous judgements from religious leaders who were supposed to be God’s representatives. And yet my African brothers and sisters follow them in their millions looking for salvation.

When salvation becomes something being sold for money, isn’t that a sign to tell us something is seriously wrong? The size of your miracle depends on the amount of money you donated?

Some Africans are so miracle crazy that I wonder whether some of these people pause to think about what they are doing? Or are they so brain-washed or brain-dead to carry out any thinking? All these things are mind games, carried out to keep you exactly where the person wants you.

I am an open-minded person. I believe everybody should be allowed to live their lives in peace whatever way they choose once it does not disturb another person. But you see these people with brains who refused to use them all in the name of religion coming out to spit nonsense, I get really angry.

Homes are being wrecked by these sets of people. They will use their hold on people to turn couples against each other. Marriages are being destroyed. Children are being violated. Women are being turned into sex slaves, and men are being manipulated and swindled out of their life savings. Many people are dying or developing serious health problems. All of these are because of Mental Slavery in Religion.

I am not saying this because I have a problem with any religion. I am saying this because I think when something happened, we need to shed our religion, sex, race, tribe, or whatever aside and call a spade a spade. No beating about the bush. To me, we are humans first before any religion.

These people use whatever means necessary to keep people who are following them in place, people hanging on to every word that comes out of their mouths as if God is speaking. This is bad! When are we going to wake up?

If you love God so much as you claimed you don’t need anybody to intercede on your behalf, go straight to God. Have a relationship with God. Churches and Mosques are to foster community spirits, meet with other people and develop a sense of togetherness.

Nowadays Mosques and Churches are where we go to show our fashion sense, and dance moves, show off who can donate the most amount of money, and oppress other people with our latest acquisitions. All these are contributing to this mental slavery we are talking about.

Some religious leaders use their predictions and visions to keep people in bondage. So bad that some people can’t leave their homes without their spiritual leader saying it is okay. Couples can’t discuss and agree at home until their Imam give it a go-ahead. Some children’s career choices are determined by these people. I know someone who left a lucrative career because her pastor said she should. What are all these?

I use to make the mistake of saying we (Christians and Muslims) are all worshipping one God, there is no reason to fight. NO! We are not worshipping the same God. Most Africans are not worshipping God, they are worshipping their religious leaders.

No wonder many people don’t believe in religion and God anymore. The whole thing is a joke. Many young people, even those raised in religious homes, are turning away from religion. They grew up seeing all that I am saying, what do you think would have been going through their minds?

I believe in God. I worship God. This is where the similarities between many people and I end, even for some that whom I share the same religion.

My God is God of mercy. My God is God of Love. My God is the God of equality. My God is just. My God is understanding. My God is accepting.

I have no idea what God some people are worshipping. They are so much in fear of their God that they make up all these ridiculous rules and regulations to get Favour from their God. This is mental slavery.

Please free yourself!

You don’t need anybody to talk to God on your behalf. Develop a relationship with God. Be human. God listens, call and you will get an answer. In God’s presence, we are all equal.

Don’t let people running businesses disguised as Men of God continue to hold you captive. Use your brain, God won’t give you a brain if it weren’t needed.

Apologies if I have offended anybody with this write-up. Let me hear what you think in the comment section below. Thanks for reading.
