Read Time:4 Minute, 18 Second

Halloo,

I hope you have hobbies? I mean things you do that make you very happy. And I hope you create the time daily to do some of these things. This is very important for your wellbeing.

The pressure of life can be very demanding and it is so easy to let things slide. But if you make it a priority and set time out to do things you absolutely enjoy; the rewards and benefits are outstanding.

Making time for yourself and creating a few moments of happiness daily is not selfish. On the contrary, it helps you be calmer and perform your other tasks and duties better.

I love listening to music. I like to sing along, even though I am tone deaf. I find it very uplifting. I don’t just listen to music, I dance, sing, and I perform it too. Like everything I do in my life; I throw my whole being into it.

I am sure many Dubliners travelling on the M50 Northside would have noticed a crazy black woman moving her heads to beats, in traffic as she drives most morning. That will be me, on my way to work.

I know sometimes I get carried away with work and other duties that I may not listen to music for days. But I read daily, which is partly work, partly hobby. I also love handling cameras, taking photographs or shooting a video, but I don’t get to do this as much as I want.

We all need one form of escape or another. Something to do that is so relaxing it takes our minds off our problems. Happiness is something we have to make efforts to create. We want to be satisfied with our lives; we have to make a deliberate effort to create time for our hobbies.

Hobbies can be anything, once you find it enjoyable and it makes you happy (and you are not hurting anybody). It could be a passive or active form of leisure. There is no accounting for taste, some people’s hobby is going to the gym, my own idea of hell.

I know due to life challenges many of us may not even remember what our hobbies are anymore, or we never even have hobbies in the first place. Well, it is never too late to try new things. Start trying new things and discover what you absolutely love doing, that you find relaxing and makes you happy. Consider it an opportunity to learn new things.

I just tried to learn skating during this lockdown, I am afraid it is a non-taker. like most physical activities, I just find them enjoyable. My next stop is to try surfing when the lockdown is lifted. Wish me luck.

Many may argue that using social media is their hobby, that it makes them happy. Who am I to argue with that? After all, I just said to do whatever makes you happy, didn’t I? But remember I also said to set time aside daily for your hobby, not spend the whole day on hobbies unless that is how you earn your living. The same rule applies to social media as a hobby.

Manage your time wisely, the control is your hands. Stay away from things that make you miserable and invest your time into things that make you happy. Stressful situations, especially those that can be avoided, should be avoided by all means.

Don’t feel guilty by putting yourself first just for a few minutes daily to do what makes you happy. It could be dancing, singing, painting, cooking, reading, yoga, fishing, diving, swimming, playing board games, walking, knitting, surfing, sky diving, mountain climbing, writing, play sports, watching a good movie, or talking. So many out there.

Check out these hobbies:

Please make time for yourself daily or as often as possible. Fit your hobbies into your life to help you with your wellbeing. You will see that you will be happier and the people around you will enjoy you more.

Thanks a lot for reading my humble post. Please let me hear your opinion in the comment section below. Can I please beg you to help share this post with your friends? Much love.

  1. Great points, thanks Ruka. Hobbies are so important, they’re how we unwind, feel good and all the things you mention (mine’s spending time underwater with fish and shipwrecks – I love the tranquility of scuba diving).

The other great thing about hobbies, for introverts, is that they make it easier for us to talk to non introverts. If people know your hobby, they ask about it and it’s easier to talk about stuff you’re really passionate about. The next thing is you’re an introvert really enjoying conversation (and even networking)!

    1. Hey Jon,
Hope you are well! I absolutely appreciate your contribution, it is really on point.
I actually enjoy a good conversation and can be quite articulate on certain topics. What I avoid if I can is small talk. It is such a bore. Networking as defined by the gurus are hardly going to be my thing ever, I suspect.
