Halloo,

Why should you or any other person feel ashamed of their mental health problems? I see no reason for that. If we can discuss other health problems candidly and get sympathy and understanding from people, why can’t the same apply to mental health?

So many people are ashamed of their mental health issues that they can’t even discuss it with close friends. It is really sad. The stigma associated with mental health is still very real. What silence does is to contribute to the suffering.

I know that not many people are brave enough to talk openly. But choose someone to talk to, please. This is one of the ways you can help yourself. If you choose to be silent, please let it be as a result of your choice, not from shame.

Yes, there is the stigma. The way to good health is to overcome the stigma. Acknowledge it for what it is; the narrow-minded view of some people about what mental health problems is. Please ignore them and don’t let this block your recovery.

I find that with self-love, therapy, medication, and my support group, my life is easier. Why not try the same? Shed all unnecessary baggage you are carrying about in form of worries, especially those you have no control over.

I also find writing and saying it out loud to anybody who care to listen or read my write-ups to be very liberating. My saying and writing about my struggles also help other people. What an awesome feeling of satisfaction that gives me.

Of course there will be the self-righteous people that will accuse you of doing it for attention and sympathy. This is where your self- love practice comes in. They won’t make a dent on you because you understand yourself and your motives.

Online, especially social network can be cruel. You might be ignored by your so called friends and immediate family members. Just remember you didn’t come out to get attention from them. Or did you?

You are out to get liberation from this monster. You are out to make sure anybody suffering like you realised they are not alone, you are with them. So those who pretend not to see do not really matter in the grand scheme of things. You are not fishing for sympathy.

For genuine support go to a support group for your type of issue. The people there will understand what you are going through and will support you. If things get too bad seek professional help in form of counselling or from your Doctors. Don’t rely on selfish people who only remember you in their times of needs to suddenly change and offer you solid shoulders to lean on. You will be disappointed.

The conversations about mental health should be ongoing. Too many people are dealing with too many life problems. Keeping quiet is adding more to the problems. It is generally believed that a problem shared is a problem half solved. Don’t be afraid to share yours with a compassionate ear.
